Meet Erika

Hi! I’m Erika Navarro. I’m a writer, director, and professional daydreamer.

My latest work of art is the short film Divine Mother.

For the past 15 years, making things has been a way of life for me, and my artistry has evolved just as much as I have.

Screenwriting is my first love, a sacred space I always return to . . . there’s nothing that fulfills me more than getting lost in worlds of my own creation . . . and filmmaking is the thrilling adventure of collaborating with other artists to bring these visions to life.

Perhaps my greatest gift as an artist is to tell challenging stories with both raw emotional truth and a sense of humor and joy. I don’t shy away from the darkness or the light.

For this reason, my work tends to evoke what I call “the good hurt. A dance between laughter and tears . . . the beautiful ache of impermanence. Ultimately, the gift of the good hurt is catharsis. A release. To feel what we need to feel, one moment at a time.

The thread that is woven through all of my work is transformation . . . cycles of death and rebirth . . . I’ve always lived my life in seasons, with a respect for both the winters and the springs that come with being human.

My dad once told me that I was born on the first warm day after a long, harsh Toronto winter, just when the snow was starting to melt. “Hmm. That sounds like me,” I thought.

Fun Facts

  • I’m half Finnish and half Venezuelan, so I’m “Finnezuelan” . . . or as I sometimes like to say, I’m a song of ice and fire. ❄️🔥
  • I’m an Aries Sun, Scorpio Rising, and Pisces Moon, a 6/2 Manifesting Generator in Human Design, and an Enneagram 3w4. My friend Suzy also nicknamed me “Sparkle Dolphin From Outer Space,” and I’ve never felt more seen.
  • I’m married to my love Luis, who’s the most charming, strong, sweet, generous, ridiculous, entertaining partner-in-life I could ever ask for. Definitely one of my muses, he’s the most Gemini Gemini you can imagine. As I once heard someone very accurately declare: “Never a dull moment with this guy.
  • I moved 7 times and lived in 6 different states before I was 10 years old. Perhaps this is the source of my restless spirit and constant craving for adventure and living in new places.
  • I love road trips. Some of my favorite routes have been up the west coast from L.A. to Northern California, Oregon, and Washington all the way to Seattle, and across the southwest through Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. I want to road trip through all 50 states and visit all the National Parks.
  • I’m a proud dog mama to a beautiful black lab mix named Adora. (Any She-Ra fans in the house? If not, you should get on that.) She is so smart, brave, loving, and well, adorable . . . and she teaches me something every day.
  • My favorite hobbies are gardening, yoga, playing the guitar, cooking, and hand lettering.
  • I’m pretty much obsessed with succulents. If you’re ever looking for a gift for me, you can’t really go wrong with a succulent. 🌵
  • I’m a blue belt in Kenpo Karate. My partner Luis is a martial arts instructor who trains in Kenpo Karate, Bahala Na Escrima, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
  • My favorite food is probably tacos. My family laughs because I can turn pretty much any leftovers into tacos. (Pro tip: My hometown L.A. has the most delicious street tacos. My favorite order is Al Pastor.)
  • One of my dreams is to own a ranch where we grow fruits and veggies and host creative, spiritual, and martial arts retreats.
  • My hair will probably be a different color every time you see me. 🌈
